The Ultimate Guide to Care For Cashmere Clothing

Cashmere wool, or simply cashmere, is a type of wool gathered from cashmere goats.

Clothes made of cashmere are considered to be one of the most luxurious pieces of clothing. They are known for their high quality and durability.
This type of wool is used in the production of hats, cardigans, jumpers, scarves, gloves and many other types of cashmere clothing as seen on Cashmere Mania.

As we said before, cashmere products can last for a long period of time, but in order to preserve their features, you must take proper care.

This article will guide you how to properly care for your cashmere garments including washing, drying, stain removal, and storing of cashmere.

Let’s get started.

Washing Cashmere

If you take a close look at the tags of your cashmere clothing, you will probably find a Dry Clean Only line on it. While it is true that dry cleaning is very effective for washing cashmere, it is also true that this cleaning method is costly. There are situations in which we need to wash the clothes in a short period of time and such practice can cost you a small fortune.

As always in the real world, there are alternatives and when we talk about cashmere, there is another practical method of washing – do-it-yourself hand washing.

Cashmere shampoo cedarIn order to perform hand washing you will need to use scentless dish soap or baby shampoo. In addition, you can also use a small quantity of detergent designed for delicate clothes.

For cashmere, I highly recommend this Cedar scent, which formula cleans and preserves the natural components of yarns, and it is specifically designed for cashmere clothing.

The washing procedure is simple, all you need to do is to pour the baby shampoo or scentless soap in sink filled with lukewarm water.

How to wash cashmere

Next, make some foam with your hands by swishing the piece of clothing. It is crucial to squeeze the item through the water gently.

After that, slowly squeeze the solution out of the item and replace the water with fresh, plain water. The main objective is to completely remove the traces of soap or detergent.

Keep in mind that everything should be performed carefully, gently and slowly.

Drying

This is the second part of the procedure because even drying of cashmere clothing requires special attention. Once you squeeze (don’t wring or twist the item) the water, you should place the item on a towel.

Push the item carefully so that the towel can absorb the excessive water. Take another towel and place the clothes there.

Leave it at room temperature and wait until the item is completely dry.

Cashmere stain removal

Although there are different types of stains that can appear on cashmere, there are few general tips to get a stain out of cashmere.

First of all, it is very important to remove them as soon as you notice these stains. Don’t just leave your sweater or any cashmere garment for the next day if you notice stain. You can use cold water and some mild stain remover. Apply the stain remover and wait until it goes inside the fabrics. You should never try to rub the remover.

After that, you should use cold water and mild detergent to remove the stain.

Finally, use the same drying procedure we have mentioned before.

Storing Cashmere

Storing cashmere clothing

Storing is equally important for the look and quality of your cashmere products. People usually store these products during the summer period. The basic rule is to store them once you wash them. Make sure that they are completely dry and clean.

In addition, make sure that the drawers are clean too because insect residue, dust and dirt can damage cashmere.

Moths are one of the biggest threats when it comes to cashmere products.

It is always a good idea to use some kind of moth-repellent (preferably natural) in order to reduce this risk.

Some other tips on caring for cashmere products

Dry cleaning should be your only option when you have not washed your cashmere item for a long time and in case there are several stubborn stains on it. NEVER use a washing machine to wash your cashmere piece of clothing.

If you believe that ironing your cashmere sweater or other piece of clothing is necessary, never iron these items directly. Use some other piece of clothing on top as a protective layer.

Those who want to store their cashmere products in the right way can use colorless cardboard box. If you place cedar disks in these boxes you will increase the protection of your product (they keep the moths away). In addition, some people use lightweight fabric bags although they don’t provide such breathability like boxes. Of course, you need to keep the cashmere products away from direct sun exposure because they can lead to discoloration of the material.

When we talk about frequency, many experts recommend washing cashmere one or two times per season. It is smart to avoid the use of hangers because the item might lose its shape.

  1. I recently ordered some cashmere types of clothing for my wife’s birthday. I appreciated this post, especially since I’m a big fan of taking good care of belongings. I never would have guessed that moth’s were a threat, so I’ll be sure to invest into some repellent. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I had a coat made for me when I was in Vietnam, they said it was cashmere, so can only assume it is. It is a dark brown colour. I don’t wear it now. I want to alter the colour so it is more wine/purple/aubergine kind of colour, then I would wear it again. I have bought some wine and purple coloured dyes. I think when using dye the water is normally quite hot. I am wondering what temperature to attempt to use for this project?
